Harsh jokes he was “very much a geek” growing up. While he played “the typical games” for a youngster living in the South — football and baseball — he was most joyful at the library, poring over books about space and designing.

Stern, who is the eldest of three children, spent the first 12 years of his life in New Orleans before his family moved to Dallas, where he graduated from the prestigious St. Mark’s School of Texas. He was the oldest of the three children. Stern attended the University of Texas in Austin after graduating from high school.

He stated, “I didn’t know if I wanted to be a scientist or an engineer when I first went to university.” I resembled a ton of children, you know, volatile on a significant, and I at last chose to be a physical science major, since I thought it was more earnestly than whatever else.”
