In contrast to Namche Bazaar, there is a different kind of settlement here today. Dutzende of monks live in Tengboche, the highest Buddhist monastery in the Khumbu Region. Buddhist stupas and shrines with carved prayers and bright prayer flags line the road. Mountains, of course. Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam are just a few of the mountains that can be seen from the monastery.
You’ll want to spend some time taking stunning pictures. You might also want to spend some time with the monks and, if you’re lucky, participate in a puja. You will still be able to light butter lamps in memory of a loved one or simply to celebrate your trip if the timing is not right for puja.
